Being brave

- Today I joined Social Workouts for their Emergency Holiday Challenge. The plan is to workout 20 times in the 37 days remaining till the holidays. The thing is I have to blog about them to count.

- I think I haven’t said it here that I am currently reading Midnight’s Children by Salman Rushdie. I’ve read 200 pages (less than half) and like it till now. I will write about it in more detail soon.

- I sometimes think that I should have gone to journalism. I love writing and I love gathering information and I like telling them. But I lack a very important feature in a journalist that is being brave. I’m not brave at all, specially if it’s about how people think of me. When somebody is not polite with me whether because I was in fault or not I get a really bad feeling and I keep blaming myself for putting myself in that compromising situation. Should stop doing that and take risks. Even if I never become a journalist I prefer a more braver me.

Carter’s Book

On the list of the books that I own but had not read I checked one more. I finished Jimmy Carter’s book: Palestine Peace Not Apartheid.

It took me so long to read, since I’m not a big fan of non-fiction in general. But this one was good. In the beginning especially when he is talking about all the neighboring countries and how they are involved in this conflict, I was thinking that the book is too shallow and doesn’t go deep in the complex feelings of these countires toward the situation. But then as the book progressed I started to like it more and when I thought about it, the name of the book is Palestine …. So everything that comes in the begining is just background. The main analysis of the book is focused on the Palestinian situation and it is very enlightening in that respect.

The Palestine-Israel situation is too complex to write about in a single post and it’s certainly out of the scope of my personal blog. But I certainly want to know more. At least for myself to know how to think about it. I know that I don’t have a fair judgement about it and maybe I can never have a fair view. Living in Iran constantly hearing one side of the story, but at the same time not trusting the government that is feeding you these facts makes the issue very complicated for all of us.

The Woman in White

All this time I didn’t write about the books I’ve read I was looking for a good plugin for wordpress that let’s me search in Amazon and then insert the link here. I know I could have just search in the website myself, but I have a similar plugin for Flickr and it’s awesome and I wanted to have one for Amazon. I didn’t find anything good. The nearest thing I found was Amazon Media Manager. I installed it but it didn’t work since Amazon decided to change its system right now. The AMM website promises an update but I wanted it now. So I searched and found the solution. But now the real problem is that I can’t use the plugin! Funny? I know.

So for now I will go the usual rout and wait for some better plugin.

As I said in the previous post I started reading the books I already have in my own library. I started with The Woman in White by Wilkie Collins.

The Woman in White

The Woman in White

I hadn’t bought the book myself. A. had bought it once he had to spend some time in Penn. station. He kept telling me that it’s a good book but once I started it and it seemed one of those 19th century books with lots of redundant descriptions and I gave it up. But this time I forced myself to go on. And it became really interesting and at times I was tempted to skip a couple of pages to see what happens next. It is a mystery novel and although it is old (apparently one of the first ones in this genre) it is very well written. I specially liked how the psychology of people was developed. I should say the style of writing (the description of clothes and environment and … ) sometimes gets tiresome. But it is definitely worth the patience.

Reading

I love reading books. I think that’s the only activity I can say this about. And besides reading itself I love being in book clubs. I love reading along with others, getting to know about new books, new people and their take on what we have read together. Lately I was in an online book club with friends on Facebook. Although discussions about the book were usually limited to “I liked the book”, “I didn’t”, but it was  good reading along with others. And since we had to choose books that are farely famous so everybody can get them regardless of where they live I never regreted reading any of them. If it was boring or if I didn’t like the style at least I could say that I didn’t like that famous book! But recently I was looking at my library and saw a lot of unread books. This never happened to me. I never left a book unread in my own library. So I left a note in the Facebook group that I won’t be reading with them untill I finish all the books I have.

Books in my library

I have already read two and I am reading another one now. I will write about each of them soon.  Stay tuned!
